Job Report: Florian Laager

From Software Engineer to Head of Visualisation and Platform

Florian Laager, Head of Visualisation and Platform

When and why did you come to us?

I had been working for a smaller software company for several years when I felt the wish to develop further. I enrolled for the master programme at TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology) and while working on my dissertation got to know a developer from humai. This in turn led me to apply directly to humai as a software engineer within platform and application development.

What has your professional career at humai been like so far?

Because of my studies I initially worked part-time. Later, working full time, I have gone from working as a software engineer to Lead Backend Developer. Since then I have been promoted to Team Lead.

What do you most like about your job?

We are like a big family where we live and breathe independent work and open communication. Particularly ingrained in us is a strong team spirit, solidarity and a “we-can-do-it” mentality. Solutions and ideas are discussed openly. You always find someone who is willing to listen. My tasks are very varied, and not a day goes by when I don’t learn something new.

What does a normal working day look like for you?

My day starts with a coffee in the communal kitchen and a chat with my colleagues. We have daily, short team meetings (Scrum) where we talk about the ongoing projects and if someone needs extra support. After that I plan my day, set up my to-do list in order of priority and get started. Most of the times, I support my colleagues with their tasks. We primarily focus on web-based solutions using coding language such as Node.js and Python. In addition I check on our Continuous Integration Pipelines and if merge requests (git) are open, something we later discuss in Code Reviews.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to apply to work at Humai?

If you want to be a part of our team, not only your skills, but also your attitude and personality are very important. We are an international lot and really like people who are ready and eager, and with a good sense of humour and lots of team spirit.
